Therapeutic doses of 131I administered to thyrotoxic patients may cause thyroid failure. The present study used a rat model to determine thyroid function after the administration of different doses of 131I (64-277 µCi). Thirty male Fisher rats in the experimental group and 30 in the control group (untreated) were followed for 6 months. The animals were 4 months old at the beginning of the experiment and were sacrificed at an age of 9 months. Hormone concentration was determined before 131I administration (4-month-old animals) and three times following 131I administration, when the animals were 7, 8, and 9 months old. The thyroid glands were removed and weighed, their volume was determined and histopathological examination was performed at the end of the... |

ABSTRACT We evaluated blood parameters of Angus and Nellore bulls fed diets with and without forage. Forty animals with initial body weight (BW) of 380±16.2 kg were housed in individual stalls. Eight bulls of each breed were fed a whole shelled corn (WSC) diet [850 g kg−1 of WCS and 150 g kg−1 of a pellet based on soybean meal, dry mater (DM) basis] or a ground corn with silage (GC) diet (300 g kg−1 of silage and 700 g kg−1 of a concentrate based on corn and soybean meal, DM basis), ad libitum, and four animals of each breed were limited-fed the GC diet [feed restriction (FR), 55% of the DM intake of bulls fed ad libitum, adjusted for the metabolic BW]. Intake was measured daily, and a metabolism trial was conducted with total collection of feces and urine... |

Tissue culture techniques have been employed for orchid mass propagation by means of the morphogenetic route of protocorm like-bodies (PLBs). This study aimed to analyze and compare Indole-acetic acid (IAA) and sugar endogenous levels in protocorm-like bodies (PLBs) induction and development in Cattleya tigrina, in order to better understand this process and to optimize micropropagation procedure protocols. Leaves grown on MS (Murashige and Skoog) culture medium, suplemented with 9 μM TDZ for PLBs induction and development were collected after 0, 2, 7, 14, 30, 60 and 100 days of cultivation, for further analysis. Increase of IAA and reduction of sugar levels are strongly related to morphogenetic response, that is, PLBs formation over the preexisting ones... |

ABSTRACT This experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of egg weight and egg physical characteristics on embryonic development, hatchability, and hatchling weight of Japanese quails (Coturnix coturnix japonica). In total, 689 eggs were classified in two categories: small (<13.5 g) or large (≥13.5 g), and different external eggshell and internal quality traits were measured. On days 6 and 14 of incubation, tissue triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4) were extracted from embryos in both egg sizes and analyzed. Relative to internal egg-quality traits, large eggs had significantly higher yolk height, yolk diameter, yolk weight, albumen height, and albumen weight than small eggs (p≤0.01). However, Haugh unit score (p=0.27) was not significantly... |

Sex differences related with pain have been studied and evidences suggesting influence of sex steroid hormones on the thresholds of pain. Experimental nociception has been test using formalin as a model of nociceptive stimulus. Association of stress, pain and metabolic and hormonal changes has not been explored. The aim of this study was to compare metabolic and hormonal changes between male rats and female rats in proestrus and estrus cycle after painful stimulus by formalin into the masseter muscle. Male and female Wistar rats (200-250 g b.w.) were submitted to an injection of formalin (F, 1.5%) or saline (S, 9.9%) into the masseter muscle and after 0 (N, control group without injection), 5, 15, 30 or 60 minutes they were decapitate and blood was... |

The aim of this work was to study effect of the dry matter intake level on the concentrations of glucose, insulin, urea, estrogen and progesterone in the blood and the level of IGF-I in the follicular liquid of heifers. Twenty seven crossbred heifers were used, in three treatments: 1.2, 1.6 and 2.6% of the live weight of dry matter intake (DMI) daily. The sanguine concentrations of glucose and estrogen were higher in the animals with 1.6% of DMI and the insulin levels were higher in the animals with 2.6% of DMI. There was an increase in the sanguine levels of urea with the increase of the DMI. There was no effect of the DMI on the progesterone levels in the sanguine plasma collected from the jugular. The progesterone levels in caudal vena were higher in... |

In this work we investigated whether priming with auxin, cytokinin, gibberellin, abscisic acid and ethylene, alters the physiological responses of seeds of pigeon pea germinated under water and cadmium stress. Seeds treated with water or non-treated seeds were used as control. Although compared to non-treated seeds we found that the hormone treatments improve the germination of pigeon pea under cadmium stress, however, these treatments did not differ from water. However, we also observed a trend of tolerance to the effects of cadmium in the presence of ethylene, suggesting that the use of this hormone may be an efficient method to overcome seed germination under metal stress. |

A choice experiment is used to evaluate how consumers in London, Frankfurt, and Paris value beef steaks with attributes such as: "hormone-free," "GM-free," farm-specific source verification, and domestic origin. The effect of various consumer characteristics on steak selection is also evaluated. Results suggest that European consumers are significantly heterogeneous in their preferences for beef steak attributes. French and German consumers have a higher willingness to pay to avoid genetically modified feed use than British consumers, while German and British consumers would pay more for growth hormone-free beef. French and German consumers are willing to pay for farm-specific source verification. |

Gap junctions are intercellular channels which connect adjacent cells and allow direct exchange of molecules of low molecular weight between them. Such a communication has been described as fundamental in many systems due to its importance in coordination, proliferation and differentiation. Recently, it has been shown that gap junctional intercellular communication (GJIC) can be modulated by several extracellular soluble factors such as classical hormones, neurotransmitters, interleukins, growth factors and some paracrine substances. Herein, we discuss some aspects of the general modulation of GJIC by extracellular messenger molecules and more particularly the regulation of such communication in the thymus gland. Additionally, we discuss recent data... |

It has been postulated that the nasal mucosa, like other human tissues, is affected by a complex interactive network of neuropeptides, cytokines, allergic and inflammatory mediators and hormones such as estrogen, in which associations between symptoms (e.g. nasal stuffiness and coryza) and hormonal variations deriving from pregnancy, use of hormonal contraceptives and menstrual cycle phases are observed. The objective is evaluating the presence of specific estrogen receptors (types alpha and beta) in inferior turbinate mucosa in healthy subjects without nasal symptoms. Samples of nasal inferior turbinate were removed from patients undergoing aesthetic nasal surgery, and analyzed using hematoxylin-eosin staining, followed by immunohistochemical preparations... |
